Master Data Management-Implementation journey experience

Master data is core reference data about an organization’s core business entities like Customers, employees, suppliers, partners, products, assets, plants, factories and warehouses. The process of achieving customer experience consistency with comprehensive product and supply chain awareness becomes challenging due to lack of a single view of the entities as most large enterprises have these entities spread across multiple systems across multiple business units and locations.

This reference data across these multiple systems are stored in relational databases with different attributes with no duplication or consistency check. The process of achieving single view for the data involves integration, aggregation, and cleansing with continuous governance broadly referred to as master data management.

A fortune 500 manufacturing company is currently addressing the challenge of master data management for customers using OpenText Cordys ( Now part of Process Suite from OpenText)

The technical solution involves creating a master data hub entities like “Customer” , “suppliers” which is then connected to multiple “spokes” to sync the data on a regular/adhoc basis. Each of the spoke represents an unique system connected via a web service endpoint connected to a data base tables or external webservices.

The synchronization (aggregation) process involves a cleansing process orchestrated as a state model making the data go through series of “buckets” or “states” to ensure a clean and consistent master data at the hub. Most cleansing is automated with oversight and exceptions managed by “Data Stewards” at a global/regional level.

The data quality and deduplication matching is done using a data quality tool from Human Inference which gives back the matching score which is used by Cordys MDM to put the data row into the relevant bucket requiring manual oversight. Most of the cleansing is automated with either creation of new customer records or merging it into an existing one.

Features of MDM Solution

  • Scheduled and adhoc data synchronization process with support for all three MDM types-registry, transactional and co existence
  • Pluggable external data quality tools
  • Comprehensive and complete data integration, transformation and enrichment on a service enabled technology layer
  • Connectors for most of the leading ERP to enable Web service integration with minimal effort
  • Rich graphical user interfaces which allow bulk approval for data records using public api for MDM event trigger

Master Data Management is a journey with various project phases done in sequential manner acting on legacy master data from various “silos” to get it into a central “hub” before initiating the process of enforcing the data governance on connected “spokes”. Data is going to be created till your business is running, it requires a structured process in getting it cleansed to ensure consistent customer experience.
